A good tan and a great tan usually come down to prep and technique, not which bottle you bought. Lusso Tan publishes application advice on its own blog, and I’ve pulled the most useful parts together here.
Before you apply anything
Exfoliate first, focusing on elbows, knees and ankles where skin is naturally drier and prone to grabbing extra color. Follow with the PH Balancing Primer rather than a heavy oil-based moisturizer, since balancing skin pH is one of the most effective ways to prevent patchy fade later.
The brush method vs mitts
Lusso Tan’s own guidance favors brushes over mitts for a specific reason: the bristles work product deeper into the skin’s outer layer, which the brand says helps color develop more naturally and wear more evenly over time. Mitts are still fine for full-body speed, but for tricky areas like knuckles, ankles and the hairline, a brush gives more control.
Protecting your hands
Stained hands are the single most common self-tan complaint, and it’s almost entirely preventable. Apply a barrier cream or plain petroleum jelly around your nails and cuticles before you start. When you get to your hands, use less product than everywhere else, and skip the spaces between your fingers and the sides of your hands entirely. Those areas don’t tan naturally in the sun either, so heavy color there is what reads as fake.
Right after application
Wash your hands with soap and water immediately after applying, even if you used a mitt or brush for the rest of your body. Wait for your chosen development window (1 hour for light, 2 for medium, 3-plus for dark with the Rapid Tan Mousse) before rinsing off, and avoid tight clothing or sitting on light fabric while it develops.
Making it last
Once your tan has developed, switch to oil-free moisturizer for daily use. Oil-based lotions break down DHA-tanned skin faster and are one of the main reasons a tan fades unevenly instead of gradually. If you notice a pale patch developing before the rest of your tan fades, a small top-up with a gradual tanner can even things back out without redoing the whole application.
When you’re ready to start fresh
Don’t just wait for a tan to fade on its own if it’s gone patchy. The Tan-Be-Gone Shower Bar is built to strip existing color faster and more evenly than exfoliating alone, which sets you up for a cleaner reapplication rather than layering new color over old, uneven fade.
