Bird feeders with built-in cameras make birdwatching easier than ever, since you can watch your feathered friends in high definition without having to disturb them by walking out into the backyard. The Birdfy Feeder Metal 2 4K takes your backyard birding to the next level, with its 4K camera allowing you to inspect each feathered visitor in even sharper detail.
Yes, a 4K camera on a bird feeder sounds like overkill. A regular 1080p camera should work well enough for most folks. However, if you want to get the sensation of really inspecting those birds up close, we guess it’s hard to beat an ultra-HD video feed streaming directly to the big screen OLED TV in your living room.
The Birdfy Feeder Metal 2 4K is bird feeder that houses a 1.8-liter stockpile of seeds, which birds can access through multiple feeding cutouts at the lower section. Most of it is cut in metal, by the way, which should make the whole thing impervious to chewing, eliminating the chances that other animals can break their way through to the main storage area. As for the non-metal parts, it has multiple see-through windows on the front and sides, which allow you to check how much seed remain inside at any point, as well as a beech wood perch where birds can grab their claws on while they partake in whatever seeds or bird feed you have on tap.
Of course, the big selling point here is the integrated 4K camera, which allows it to capture the feeding birds in all their ultra-HD, full-color glory, even in the dark with its onboard IR night vision. Do note, framerate is permanently capped at 20 fps, which, the outfit claims, is the only way to ensure a smooth livestream at all times. The stream is sent directly via Wi-Fi to the companion app, allowing you to check in on what the camera sees at any point. From there, you should be able to mirror the feed onto a bigger screen if you want to see your feathered visitors in full detail. According to the outfit, the Wi-Fi capabilities have been beefed up by incorporating an external antenna on top of the feeder, allowing you to position it much further from the main house without needing to use a signal extender.
The Birdfy Feeder Metal 2 4K has a built-in 9,000mAh battery that powers the camera and wireless connectivity at all times, so there’s no need to keep plugging in fresh cells regularly. Even better, it comes with a 2W solar panel that automatically charges the battery, eliminating the need to ever plug it into another power source. Other features include tool-free assembly, multiple mounting options (pole, tree, or wall), free automatic online storage for 20-second clips (deleted after 30 days), IP66 waterproofing, and a moss green finish that’s designed to blend into trees and other vegetation. There’s also an optional subscription service which gives you access to an AI system that can identify bird species and provide various information about them.
